Asaram Bapu Gets Another Bail Extension — Court Cites “Health Concerns”

The Gujarat High Court has extended the temporary bail of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu till 21 August, citing medical reasons. Asaram, serving a life sentence for raping a minor in 2013, had approached the court for more time outside prison despite earlier telling the court that he would not seek another extension.

A division bench of Justice Ilesh J Vora and Justice P M Raval granted the extension during the hearing of Asaram’s appeal against his conviction by the Gandhinagar sessions court.

Earlier, on 3 July, the High Court had allowed him a one-month bail based on his lawyer’s assurance that no further request would be made. The bench had then clearly stated that no similar plea would be entertained in future.

However, Asaram moved the Supreme Court challenging the 3 July order. On 30 July, the apex court dismissed his plea but allowed him to approach the High Court again if his health worsened, directing that such a request be decided promptly.

During Thursday’s hearing, the High Court sought details of Asaram’s current medical condition. The State’s counsel said he had suffered a cardiac issue in July, but more verification was needed from the two hospitals treating him. While the State suggested bail till 14 August, the court extended it till 21 August to allow time for updated medical reports.

Justice Vora remarked, “We will extend till the 21st. The petition won’t be disposed of yet. Let’s see the developments by then.”

Asaram, also known as Ashumal, remains in jail for the sexual assault of a minor girl, and his repeated bail requests are now under strict judicial watch given his earlier promise not to seek further relief.
