Supreme Court Cancels Sushil Kumar’s Bail in Sagar Dhankhar Murder Case
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (13 August) cancelled the bail granted to Olympian wrestler Sushil Kumar by the Delhi High Court in the Sagar Dhankhar murder case. The court has directed him to surrender within a week.
A bench of Justice Sanjay Karol and Justice Prashant Kumar Mishra passed this order while hearing an appeal filed by Ashok Dhankad, father of the deceased, challenging the High Court’s decision of March 2025 to grant bail to Kumar.
Sushil Kumar was arrested in May 2021 for the alleged murder of 27-year-old former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankhar at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium. The High Court had granted him bail noting that only 30 out of 186 prosecution witnesses had been examined in over three years of trial.
However, the victim’s father approached the Supreme Court alleging that Kumar had threatened a key witness when he was earlier released on interim bail.
The case is titled Ashok Dhankad vs State NCT of Delhi & Anr (SLP(Crl) No. 5370/2025).
