“Wink at Judges”: SC Women Lawyers Association Demands Public Apology from Justice Katju Over Misogynistic Remarks
The Supreme Court Women Lawyers Association (SCWLA) has strongly condemned alleged misogynistic remarks made by former Supreme Court judge, Justice Markandey Katju. He had reportedly suggested that women lawyers could secure favourable judicial orders by “winking” at judges.
In a press release, SCWLA described the remarks as offensive and a direct attack on the dignity, credibility, and professional standing of women in the legal profession.
“It is disturbing that a former judge, once entrusted with safeguarding constitutional values, would trivialise the merit and hard work of women lawyers through casual sexism. Such comments demean women advocates, undermine faith in the impartiality of the justice system, and reinforce harmful stereotypes that have no place in a democracy,” the Association said.
SCWLA demanded an unconditional public apology from Justice Katju and urged the legal community to reject such regressive attitudes. It assured women lawyers that their worth lies in their intellect, integrity, and commitment to justice, not in outdated sexist notions.
The Association also stressed that those who have held constitutional office carry a continuing responsibility to uphold the dignity of the judiciary and promote equality.
