Delhi Lawyers Announce Two-Day Strike Over Police Evidence Order
The Coordination Committee of All District Bar Associations of Delhi has announced a two-day strike on 22nd and 23rd August 2025. During this period, no lawyer will appear in court either physically or virtually, the Committee said. It also warned that strict action would be taken against advocates who defy the call.
The protest is against a notification issued by Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena on 13th August. The notification allows police officials to record their evidence from police stations through video conferencing.
The lawyers argue that this move undermines the fairness of trials. In their representation to the LG and the Central government, they pointed out that if police officers depose from their own stations, there is no guarantee that they are not being influenced by notes, documents, or external help. They further stressed that presentation of physical evidence, such as weapons or seized items, cannot be properly done through such a process, making the deposition vulnerable to manipulation.
Despite their written request on 20th August to withdraw the notification, the government did not take any action. As a result, the lawyers’ body decided to abstain from work.
The Committee said, “There is deep resentment among the legal fraternity against this arbitrary and unlawful notification. It goes against the principles of law and fairness. Therefore, we have unanimously decided that work will remain suspended in all District Courts of Delhi on 22nd and 23rd August.”
