Supreme Court Collegium Backs 26 Names for Allahabad High Court, Includes Four Women

NEW DELHI: In a major step towards strengthening the Allahabad High Court, the Supreme Court Collegium has recommended 26 names for appointment as judges. The decision was taken in its meeting held on September 1. Out of the 26 candidates, 12 are practising lawyers and 14 are judicial officers.

Notably, the list includes four women—Senior Advocates Garima Prashad and Swarupama Chaturvedi from the Supreme Court, and judicial officers Vani Ranjan Agrawal and Babita Rani. The move is seen as a significant push towards greater gender representation in the higher judiciary.

The Collegium’s recommendations follow its interaction with 33 candidates to address the existing vacancies in the Allahabad High Court. Once cleared by the Central Government and approved by the President, the appointees will take oath as judges.

Lawyers recommended (12): Vivek Saran, Adnan Ahmad, Vivek Kumar Singh, Garima Prashad (Senior Advocate), Sudhanshu Chauhan, Abdhesh Kumar Chaudhary, Swarupama Chaturvedi (Senior Advocate), Jai Krishna Upadhyay, Siddharth Nandan, Kunal Ravi Singh, Indrajeet Shukla, Satya Veer Singh.

Judicial officers recommended (14): Dr Ajay Kumar-II, Chawan Prakash, Divesh Chandra Samant, Prashant Mishra-I, Tarun Saxena, Rajeev Bharti, Padam Narain Mishra, Lakshmi Kant Shukla, Jai Prakash Tiwari, Devendra Singh-I, Sanjiv Kumar, Vani Ranjan Agrawal, Achal Sachdev, Babita Rani.

If approved, these appointments will further enhance the working strength of the Allahabad High Court, which has long faced a shortage of judges.
