Delhi Court Hears Plea on Sonia Gandhi’s 1980 Electoral Roll Entry, Reserves Verdict

A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved its order on a plea seeking registration of an FIR against Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for her alleged inclusion in the voters’ list before she officially became an Indian citizen.

The matter was heard by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Vaibhav Chaurasia at Rouse Avenue Court. The plea, filed by complainant Vikas Tripathi and argued by Senior Advocate Pavan Narang, claimed that Gandhi’s name was added to the electoral roll of the New Delhi constituency in 1980.

According to the complaint, Gandhi became an Indian citizen only in April 1983, yet her name allegedly appeared in the electoral rolls in 1980, was deleted in 1982, and re-entered in 1983. The petitioner argued that this sequence indicates the use of forged documents, suggesting that a cognisable offence was committed.

The Court, however, has not issued any notice either to Sonia Gandhi or to the Delhi Police. The order has been reserved after completion of arguments.
