Cheating Case: Rajasthan HC Stays FIR Against Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone

The Rajasthan High Court has put a temporary halt on the investigation against Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone in a cheating case linked to the sale of a Hyundai car.

Justice Sudesh Bansal also ordered that the probe against Hyundai Motor India’s Managing Director Unsoo Kim and Chief Operating Officer Tarun Garg will remain stayed.

The case began after a Bharatpur resident purchased a Hyundai Alcazar in June 2022. After driving nearly 67,000 kilometres, he claimed the car developed repeated technical and manufacturing defects. When his requests for a replacement or refund went unanswered, he filed a criminal complaint. A magistrate then directed the police to register an FIR for cheating and criminal conspiracy.

Khan, Padukone, Kim and Garg approached the High Court, arguing that they were wrongly dragged into the case. They said they had no role in selling the car or handling consumer grievances and that the complaint failed to show any offence committed by them.

After hearing the matter, the Court issued notices to the police and the complainant. It stayed the investigation and also suggested that the parties consider mediation to resolve the dispute.

Senior Advocates Kapil Sibal, VR Bajwa and Madhav Mitra, along with a team of lawyers, represented the petitioners. Public Prosecutor Vivek Choudhary appeared for the State of Rajasthan.
