Centre Approves Transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan to Allahabad High Court

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice has officially notified the transfer of Justice Atul Sreedharan from the Madhya Pradesh High Court to the Allahabad High Court.

This decision follows the Supreme Court Collegium’s revised recommendation made on October 14, after the government requested that Justice Sreedharan not be moved to the Chhattisgarh High Court as earlier proposed. Accepting the government’s request, the Collegium instead recommended his transfer to the Allahabad High Court, which has now been approved by the President under Article 222(1) of the Constitution.

According to the government’s notification dated October 18, Justice Sreedharan has been directed to assume charge of his new post at the Allahabad High Court.

Justice Sreedharan was earlier part of the Madhya Pradesh High Court Collegium and would have held a similar position in the Chhattisgarh High Court. However, in Allahabad, he will rank seventh in seniority.

This transfer comes just months after his return to the Madhya Pradesh High Court from the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in March 2025. He had been transferred there in April 2023 on his own request since his daughter was beginning her legal practice in Madhya Pradesh.

Justice Atul Sreedharan began his legal career in 1992, joining the chambers of Senior Advocate Gopal Subramanium in Delhi. He worked with him until 1997, assisting in several civil and criminal cases before the Supreme Court and Delhi High Court. Later, he practiced independently in Delhi before moving to Indore in 2001, where he worked closely with Senior Advocate Satyendra Kumar Vyas.

He also served as a Panel Advocate and Government Advocate for the State of Madhya Pradesh before the Indore Bench of the High Court. Justice Sreedharan was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on April 7, 2016, and became a Permanent Judge on March 17, 2018.
