PIL in Delhi High Court Seeks Action Against Paresh Rawal’s Film The Taj Story
A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Delhi High Court against the upcoming film The Taj Story, starring veteran actor Paresh Rawal. The movie, scheduled to release on October 31, has sparked controversy following the release of its poster depicting a statue of Lord Shiva emerging from the Taj Mahal’s dome — a visual that revived the fringe claim that the Taj Mahal was originally a Hindu temple.
The PIL, filed by advocate Shakeel Abbas, contends that the movie promotes fabricated and provocative narratives about the Taj Mahal’s origins, which contradict established historical research and expert consensus. The plea seeks directions to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to re-examine the certification granted to the film and to remove or modify portions that may disturb communal harmony.
It further urges that the film must carry a clear disclaimer, informing viewers that it explores a disputed interpretation of history. According to the petitioner, the film’s content could erode public trust in historical scholarship, potentially ignite communal tension, and harm India’s global image by spreading misleading ideas about a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The plea also claims that the movie includes divisive scenes and references that echo controversial statements previously made by certain political figures and organisations, warning that such portrayals could trigger unrest across the country.
