Delhi High Court Steps In to Protect DU Admissions of Two BPL Applicants

The Delhi High Court has directed Delhi University (DU) to process the admission of two Below Poverty Line (BPL) category students, even though they could not pay their fees within the original deadline.

The students had secured seats in the School of Open Learning for the B.A. (Hons.) English with History (Minor) course for the 2025–26 academic year. However, due to financial difficulties, they were unable to arrange the fee in time. They approached the High Court seeking an extension.

Justice Jyoti Singh allowed them to deposit the fee within ten days and instructed the University to complete their admission formalities once the payment is made.

The Court noted that the students had already qualified for admission and belonged to the BPL category, and the course was offered through Open Learning. Considering these special circumstances, the Court granted relief.

The judge also clarified that this order was based on the unique facts of the case and should not be treated as a precedent for other similar matters.

Advocate Gautam Singh represented the petitioners. DU was represented by Advocates Mohinder JS Rupal, Hardik Rupal, Aishwarya Malhotra, and Tripta Sharma.
