Government Launches Nyaya Setu WhatsApp Chatbot for Free Legal Guidance

The Indian government has launched Nyaya Setu, a free legal help service available on WhatsApp, to make legal guidance easy and accessible for citizens. The service was rolled out by the Ministry of Law and Justice on January 1, 2026, as part of its effort to improve access to justice.

Nyaya Setu allows people to ask legal questions related to property disputes, divorce, matrimonial issues, civil matters, criminal law, corporate law, and other legal concerns. The service works through WhatsApp and uses artificial intelligence to understand questions and provide simple, easy-to-understand responses.

To use Nyaya Setu, a person needs to send a message on WhatsApp to the number 7217711814, which appears as Tele-Law. After verifying the mobile number, users can interact with the chatbot. The service is available 24/7 and is completely free, making it especially useful for people who cannot easily visit a lawyer or legal office.

The chatbot helps users understand basic legal concepts, their rights, and the legal options available to them. If needed, Nyaya Setu also connects users with panel lawyers for initial professional guidance. This helps citizens get clarity about their case at an early stage, even before going to court.

Legal experts explain that Nyaya Setu does not replace lawyers or courts. Instead, it acts as a support system that guides people through legal information and helps them access existing legal aid schemes such as Tele-Law, Nyaya Bandhu, and Legal Services Authorities. Any actual legal advice continues to be given by qualified lawyers or statutory legal aid bodies.

Overall, Nyaya Setu aims to reduce confusion around legal processes, remove location and cost barriers, and make legal assistance more reachable for people across India.
