Madras High Court Restrains Illegal Broadcast of Tamil Film Parasakthi
The Madras High Court has passed an interim order restraining unauthorised broadcast of the upcoming Tamil film Parasakthi by internet service providers and cable television operators.
Justice Senthilkumar Ramamoorthy granted the interim injunction after a suit was filed by film producer Aakash Baskaran’s production house, Dawn Pictures. The producer approached the Court fearing copyright infringement just days before the film’s theatrical release.
The Court observed that in cases involving films and creative works, allowing unauthorised broadcasts could cause serious and irreversible harm to filmmakers. Once a movie is illegally aired or shared, the financial and creative damage cannot be undone, the Court noted.
At the same time, the High Court also recognised that such restraining orders could affect genuine businesses. Justice Ramamoorthy pointed out that legitimate cable operators or service providers could suffer losses due to the injunction. To balance these interests, the Court directed the producer to indemnify any respondent whose lawful business is adversely impacted because of the order.
Before granting relief, the Court carefully examined documents submitted by the producer to establish ownership and licensing rights over the film. The judge also questioned whether Dawn Pictures was the producer or merely an exclusive licensee, and only after satisfying itself on these issues did the Court issue the interim injunction.
The order will remain in force until the next hearing. The Court has also issued notice to all respondents, including ISPs and cable operators, seeking their replies in the matter.
Parasakthi is a Tamil political drama set against the backdrop of the 1965 Anti-Hindi Imposition protests in Tamil Nadu. The film is written and directed by Sudha Kongara and produced by Aakash Baskaran under the Dawn Pictures banner.
The movie features Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role, along with Ravi Mohan, Atharvaa Murali, and Sreeleela. Music is composed by GV Prakash Kumar, marking his 100th film as a composer, with cinematography by Ravi K Chandran.
Parasakthi is scheduled to release in theatres on January 10, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival, and has already generated strong buzz due to its political theme and period setting.
