Rajasthan High Court Stays Probe in CLAT Coaching Dispute Over Top Ranker
The Rajasthan High Court has stayed a police investigation arising from a dispute between two CLAT coaching institutes over claims of mentoring a top-ranked student in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
The case began after one coaching institute filed a complaint alleging that a rival institute had offered a lucrative deal to a CLAT ranker in return for public endorsement. It was also alleged that the student’s parent tried to pressure and threaten the complainant institute’s reputation.
While hearing the matter, Justice Baljinder Singh Sandhu noted that the dispute appeared to be driven by business competition rather than any serious criminal conduct. The Court pointed out that the case involved a minor student and that the core issue was about claiming credit for a top rank, which is common in the coaching industry.
The High Court observed that both coaching institutions should have acted responsibly, especially since the matter involved a student’s future. The Court stressed that such disputes should not escalate into criminal proceedings and expected the parties to show restraint and resolve the issue amicably.
Considering the nature of the dispute, the Court directed that the matter be referred to mediation. It also ordered the parent of the student to participate in the mediation process. Until further orders, the High Court stayed all further investigation in the case.
