‘Gunda Raj’ in Courtrooms: Supreme Court Flags Alleged Assault on Lawyer at Tis Hazari

The Supreme Court has strongly criticised an alleged attack on a lawyer inside Delhi’s Tis Hazari court complex, calling such incidents “gunda raj” and a clear failure of the rule of law.

The matter was mentioned before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalaya Bagchi and NV Anjaria. The Court made it clear that violence within court premises is completely unacceptable and cannot be tolerated under any circumstances.

According to the lawyer, the incident took place on February 7 inside the courtroom of an Additional District Judge at Tis Hazari Courts. He claimed that while he was representing the accused, the complainant’s advocate, along with several others, allegedly assaulted him inside the courtroom.

The advocate told the Court that the judge and other court staff were present at the time of the incident. Taking the allegation seriously, the Chief Justice asked whether the matter had been formally brought to the notice of the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court.

When informed that no such step had been taken, the Supreme Court directed the lawyer to write to the Delhi High Court Chief Justice for administrative action. The Court said the issue should be dealt with on the administrative side and asked the advocate to keep the Supreme Court informed after following the proper procedure.
