Justice Lisa Gill Transferred from Punjab & Haryana High Court to Andhra Pradesh High Court
The Central Government has officially notified the transfer of Justice Lisa Gill from the Punjab and Haryana High Court to the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
The transfer was made through a notification issued by the Centre following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium.
Announcing the development, Arjun Ram Meghwal stated in a social media post that the President of India exercised constitutional powers to effect the transfer after consultation with the Chief Justice of India.
“In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, the President of India, after consultation with Chief Justice of India, has transferred Ms. Justice Lisa Gill, Judge, High Court of Punjab and Haryana to be a Judge of High Court of Andhra Pradesh. I convey my best wishes to her,” the Minister said.
The recommendation for Justice Gill’s transfer was made by the Supreme Court Collegium last week. The move was part of the Collegium’s decision taken in anticipation of the upcoming retirement of the current Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.
According to the Collegium’s recent policy, judges who are likely to become Chief Justices of High Courts are transferred at least two months before the incumbent Chief Justice retires. This approach is intended to allow the incoming judge sufficient time to familiarise themselves with the functioning, administration, and judicial work of the High Court before assuming the role of Chief Justice.
Justice Lisa Gill currently serves as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Following the transfer, she will take charge as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, and her appointment as Chief Justice is expected to take effect once the vacancy in the office of the Chief Justice arises.
The policy of early transfers of prospective Chief Justices was recently adopted by the Supreme Court Collegium to ensure smoother leadership transitions within High Courts across the country.
