Delhi High Court Told MEITY Blocked Dr Nimo Yadav X Account Over Posts On PM Modi

In the Delhi High Court matter concerning the blocked X account “Dr Nimo Yadav,” the Court was told that the Central government ordered the account’s blocking after finding that it portrayed Prime Minister Narendra Modi “in bad taste” and spread what it described as false narratives.

The issue came up before Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav after X placed material before the Court, including the confidential blocking order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on March 18. The document was also shared with petitioner Prateek Sharma, who operates the account.

According to the blocking order placed before the Court, the account allegedly carried defamatory posts using photographs, videos, and AI-manipulated content. The order stated that such posts created controversy, questioned the government, and defamed the Prime Minister through misleading material circulated on the platform.

The government’s order further said that the spread of such false information could affect public order and may even create internal security concerns. This was the basis on which the account was blocked in India under the Information Technology Act, along with 11 other X handles.

Sharma has approached the High Court seeking production of the blocking order. His case is that the continued blocking of the account has caused financial loss and disturbed his professional work, since the account is stated to be a source of livelihood for him.

During the hearing, counsel for Sharma submitted that if the allegedly objectionable material is identified, necessary steps could be taken, if required. This appears to be part of the petitioner’s effort to seek clarity on the exact content that led to the government’s action.

On the other side, counsel for the Central government sought time from the Court to find out whether there is any mechanism through which the petitioner’s grievance can be properly examined. The request was considered by the Court during the proceedings on Monday.

Justice Kaurav granted time to the government and indicated that the matter would be heard again next week. The proceedings therefore remain at an early stage, with the Court yet to examine the legality and scope of the blocking action in detail.

Advocates Vrinda Grover, Nakul Gandhi, Apar Gupta and Soutik Banerjee appeared for Sharma. Advocate Ankit Parhar appeared for X, while Advocate Avshreya Rudy represented the Central government. The case now raises fresh questions around online speech, platform compliance, and government blocking powers.
