Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal Appointed NCLT President After Retirement from High Court

Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal

Former Punjab & Haryana High Court Justice Anupinder Singh Grewal has been appointed as the President of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), marking a significant development in India’s insolvency and corporate adjudication framework. His appointment comes shortly after his retirement from the High Court in March 2026.

The appointment has been made for a tenure of five years or until he attains the age of 67 years, whichever is earlier. Justice Grewal takes over from Justice Ramalingam Sudhakar, who had been serving as the NCLT President since November 2021 and demitted office earlier this year.

Justice Grewal’s elevation fills a key leadership position that had remained vacant for some time. During this period, the NCLT functioned under acting presidents, which led to administrative challenges and litigation over interim appointments. The issue had also reached judicial forums, including the Central Administrative Tribunal and the Delhi High Court.

Born on March 10, 1964, in Ludhiana district of Punjab, Justice Grewal comes from an agriculturist background. He began his legal practice in 1992 at the Punjab and Haryana High Court and steadily built a strong career in public law and constitutional matters.

Over the years, he held several important positions in the Punjab government’s legal setup. His roles included Assistant Advocate General, Deputy Advocate General, Senior Deputy Advocate General, and Additional Advocate General. These positions allowed him to represent the State in a wide range of legal issues.

Justice Grewal also served as Central Government Counsel and Senior Panel Counsel, appearing on behalf of the Union of India in significant matters. His work spanned constitutional law, service matters, arbitration, and public law, reflecting a broad legal expertise.

He was appointed as an additional judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in September 2014. Subsequently, he was transferred to the Rajasthan High Court, where he was confirmed as a permanent judge in 2016. Later, he was repatriated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in the same year.

After serving for over a decade on the Bench, Justice Grewal retired on March 10, 2026. His judicial career is noted for handling a wide range of cases and contributing to the development of legal principles in multiple areas.

His appointment as NCLT President is expected to bring stability to the tribunal’s functioning. The NCLT plays a crucial role in resolving corporate disputes and insolvency matters under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, making the leadership position highly significant.
