Rohitashya Roy Appointed New Advocate General of Jharkhand After Rajiv Ranjans Resignation

The Jharkhand government has appointed Rohitashya Roy as the new Advocate General of the State following the resignation of Senior Advocate Rajiv Ranjan. The appointment was made through an official notification issued by the State’s law department on Sunday.

Rajiv Ranjan had been serving as the Advocate General since 2020. His resignation was accepted by Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, clearing the way for the appointment of Roy as the State’s chief legal officer.

As Advocate General, Roy will act as the principal legal adviser to the Jharkhand government and represent the State in important legal matters before courts. His appointment will remain effective until further orders from the government.

The change marks a significant transition in Jharkhand’s legal administration. The Advocate General holds a constitutional position and plays a key role in advising the government on legal and constitutional issues, besides appearing on behalf of the State in major litigation.

The development comes amid similar changes in neighbouring Bihar. Reports indicate that Bihar Advocate General Prashant Kumar Shahi also resigned from his position on Sunday.

Shahi had been appointed Advocate General in 2023 during the tenure of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Following the recent swearing-in of BJP leader Samrat Chaudhary as Bihar’s Chief Minister, Shahi reportedly stepped down to enable the new government to appoint its own chief legal adviser.

The appointments and resignations of Advocate Generals often coincide with political transitions, as State governments typically prefer legal advisers who enjoy their confidence. Such changes are viewed as an important part of administrative restructuring following shifts in political leadership.

With Rohitashya Roy now assuming the office of Advocate General, attention will be on the legal strategy and representation of the Jharkhand government in key matters before courts in the coming months.
