Advocate VR Kamalanathan Re-Elected as President of Madras Bar Association
Advocate VR Kamalanathan has been re-elected as the President of the Madras Bar Association (MBA) after the recent elections held last month. This marks his second term in the top position, as he had earlier served as President in 2021.
Along with him, Advocate J Pothiraj has been elected as the new Secretary of the Association, while Advocate VT Balaji will serve as the Treasurer. Advocate D Raja has been appointed as the Librarian.
The newly elected Executive Committee members include Advocates Muizz Ali, Y Kavitha, G Arulselvi, P Elayarajkumar and V Vasanthakumar.
The Madras Bar Association is one of the oldest bar bodies functioning at the Madras High Court. It was established in 1865, three years after the High Court itself was created through a royal charter. Initially known simply as the “Bar Association,” membership was limited to British barristers. Over time, Indian barristers were allowed to join. In 1898, the Association was officially renamed as the Madras Bar Association.
It was only in 1951 that membership was opened to advocates holding law degrees from Indian universities. Today, the MBA remains a prominent and historic body representing advocates practising before the Madras High Court.
