Allahabad HC Rejects Plea to Ban Jolly LLB 3, Finds Nothing Offensive
The Allahabad High Court has dismissed a petition that sought a ban on the release of Jolly LLB 3, starring Akshay Kumar, for allegedly showing the legal profession in poor light.
A Division Bench of Justice Sangeeta Chandra and Justice Brij Raj Singh watched the three official trailers and teasers of the film. After review, the Court said that there was nothing objectionable in them to justify a ban.
The judges also examined the song “Bhai Vakeel Hai” and noted that its lyrics did not interfere with or demean the work of genuine advocates.
The petition was filed by advocate Jay Vardhan Shukla, who argued that the film portrays lawyers in a derogatory manner, discourages people from joining the profession, and creates disillusionment among law students. He claimed that such representation could damage the future of the justice system.
On the other hand, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey pointed out that the plea was not maintainable since the petitioner had not approached the appropriate authority under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. He added that anyone aggrieved by online content must first take the issue up with the publisher or intermediary.
Agreeing with this argument, the Court observed that the petitioner had not followed the proper procedure before coming to court and therefore dismissed the petition.
Advocates Rishab Khare and Anadi Chitranshi appeared for the petitioner, while Senior Advocate SB Pandey with advocate Varun Pandey represented the Union of India.
