Six additional judges of the Bombay High Court have been appointed as permanent judges after receiving approval from the Central Government. The appointments were notified by the Ministry of Law and Justice on June 6, 2026.
The judges elevated as permanent judges are Justice Nivedita Prakash Mehta, Justice Prafulla Surendrakumar Khubalkar, Justice Ashwin Damodar Bhobe, Justice Rohit Wasudeo Joshi, Justice Advait Mahendra Sethna and Justice Pravin Sheshrao Patil.
The notification states that the President of India has exercised powers under Article 217(1) of the Constitution to appoint these additional judges as judges of the High Court. Their appointments will take effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices.
Among the six judges, Justice Pravin Sheshrao Patil was appointed as an additional judge in January 2025. The remaining five judges joined the Bench as additional judges in October 2024. With the latest notification, all six will now continue as permanent judges of the Court.
The appointments are significant for the functioning of the Bombay High Court, which remains one of the country’s busiest constitutional courts. At present, the High Court has a sanctioned strength of 94 judges, comprising 71 permanent judges and 23 additional judges.
Following these appointments, the court’s working strength stands at 56 permanent judges and 20 additional judges. The move is expected to provide greater stability to the Bench and strengthen judicial capacity as the court continues to handle a large volume of civil, criminal, constitutional and commercial matters.
