CJI Gavai Recommends Justice Surya Kant, a Former Himachal HC Chief Justice, as Next CJI
Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai has recommended Justice Surya Kant to succeed him as the next Chief Justice of India after his retirement on November 23.
Justice Surya Kant, who has been serving as a judge of the Supreme Court since May 24, 2019, is expected to assume office as the CJI and will have a tenure of around 14 months, lasting until February 9, 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant hails from a middle-class family. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and obtained his law degree in 1984 from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak.
He began his legal career in 1984 at the Hisar District Court before moving to the Punjab and Haryana High Court a year later. Recognised for his legal acumen, he was designated as a Senior Advocate in March 2001.
Justice Kant served as the Advocate General of Haryana until his elevation as a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. Later, he became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018, before being elevated to the Supreme Court in May 2019.
If appointed, Justice Surya Kant will become the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
