CJI Surya Kant Prioritises Faster Case Disposal, Unveils Clear Action Plan
Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant has once again made it clear that clearing the backlog of cases will be his top priority. Speaking at the 23rd Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, he said that the judiciary must move toward a system where cases are resolved within a predictable timeline.
CJI Kant stressed that mediation can play a major role in reducing delays. Calling it a “powerful game changer,” he explained that he has been working on a mediation mission for the past six months with support from fellow judges to make it more effective and widely used.
He also said that the Supreme Court must remain open and accessible to every citizen. “The Supreme Court is for the common man too,” he noted, adding that reforms have already begun to improve how cases are listed and prioritised.
To strengthen the justice system at the grassroots level, CJI Kant shared plans to upgrade district courts through better training and newer learning platforms run by judicial academies and High Courts. This, he said, is essential to help judges deal with modern challenges such as cybercrime and digital arrest—issues that were unimaginable a few years ago.
He pointed out that cybercrimes often involve victims in India but offenders sitting in other countries. For judges to handle such cases effectively, continuous training and technological awareness are necessary.
CJI Surya Kant, who began his legal career in Hisar and became Haryana’s youngest Advocate General at age 38, has served on the Supreme Court since 2019. Over the years, he has contributed to key decisions across different areas of law, including constitutional matters such as the Article 370 case.
Known for his balanced approach, consensus-building style, and deep commitment to social justice, he shared that his early life struggles shaped his understanding of law and fairness.
The Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (Dec 4–6), held under the theme “Transforming Tomorrow,” featured prominent national leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, and CJI Surya Kant.
