Delhi High Court Issues Bailable Warrants After Litigant Calls Proceedings ‘Stupid’
The Delhi High Court has issued bailable warrants against a litigant, Adeeshwar Singhal, after he failed to appear in person despite being directed to do so and went on to call the court proceedings “stupid”.
The case arose from an incident in April 2025, where Singhal allegedly made disrespectful and scandalous remarks against a district judge in Shahdara. Taking note of this, the High Court had registered a suo motu contempt case in May this year.
On May 23, the Court had asked Singhal to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him. He was later provided a Legal Aid Advocate to represent him, but the counsel withdrew in October citing Singhal’s lack of cooperation. The Court then ordered him to be present personally before it.
However, during the November 6 hearing, Singhal appeared through video conferencing instead of attending physically. When questioned about this by the Division Bench of Justice Vivek Chaudhary and Justice Manoj Jain, he reportedly gave vague responses, refused to share his location, and went on to call the proceedings “stupid”.
The Court recorded his remarks in its order, stating:
“So much so, he also uttered that he would not be facing these ‘stupid proceedings’.”
Observing his continued disregard for judicial directions, the Bench said it had no choice but to take coercive measures to secure his presence.
Accordingly, the Court directed:
“Let bailable warrants in a sum of ₹10,000 be issued against the respondent/contemnor through the concerned SHO, returnable on the next date of hearing.”
The matter is now listed for hearing on December 2, 2025.
