Delhi High Court Protects Sudhir Chaudhary’s Personality Rights, Orders Removal of Deepfakes

The Delhi High Court has granted protection to journalist and Doordarshan anchor Sudhir Chaudhary’s personality rights, directing social media platforms to remove all AI-generated and deepfake videos that misuse his identity.

Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora observed that Chaudhary’s name, image, voice, and likeness are protected under the law. The Court said that if any person uploads such content, Chaudhary must first send them a notice marked to the platform concerned. The uploader will have 48 hours to take down the material. If they fail to do so, the platforms like Google and Meta will be required to remove it.

Senior Advocate Rajshekhar Rao, representing Chaudhary, submitted that several social media users were posting AI-generated videos falsely portraying the journalist and using his voice for commercial purposes without consent. Rao highlighted that none of the videos were created or approved by Chaudhary himself.

After hearing the matter, the High Court passed an order ensuring the protection of Chaudhary’s personality and digital identity, marking another important step in combating deepfake misuse in India.
