Delhi High Court Refers Over 28,000 Cases to Mediation in Three-Month Drive
More than 28,000 cases pending before the Delhi High Court and various district courts in the national capital were referred for mediation during a special three-month campaign organised by the High Court.
Out of these, 4,316 cases were successfully settled, while 13,938 cases are still pending and continue to be processed for settlement. The Delhi High Court stated that these figures reflect the success of the mediation initiative, which helped promote amicable dispute resolution and reduce the burden on regular courts.
The drive was conducted between July 1 and September 30, 2025, as part of a nationwide campaign conceptualised by the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and the Mediation and Conciliation Project Committee (MCPC). The initiative was launched under the guidance of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai and Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant, who also serves as the Executive Chairman of NALSA.
In Delhi, the campaign was led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya, supported by Justice Navin Chawla and Justice C Hari Shankar.
According to the High Court’s official communication, public awareness about the mediation drive was created through advertisements, posters, banners, and announcements on the official websites of the Delhi High Court, district courts, and Samadhan, the Delhi High Court Mediation Centre.
To ensure that the High Court’s regular functioning remained unaffected, Registrars and Joint Registrars were directed to identify suitable cases for mediation and manage the referral proceedings. The Court also appointed a Nodal Officer to oversee coordination and ensure smooth execution throughout the drive.
The High Court noted that Mediation Centres witnessed strong participation from parties, advocates, and trained mediators who worked collaboratively to resolve civil, family, and commercial disputes.
Innovative steps such as online mediation sessions, focused settlement drives, and personalised case follow-ups were key factors in the success of the initiative. With a large number of cases being listed daily, effective strategies were used to handle the high volume and assist litigants efficiently.
The Delhi High Court’s mediation drive highlights the growing importance of mediation as an effective tool for resolving disputes quickly, fairly, and with less stress for the parties involved.
