Ex-SC Judge Reddy to Contest Against NDA Nominee in Vice-Presidential Race

The Opposition’s INDIA bloc has declared former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as its candidate for the upcoming vice-presidential elections. With this move, a direct contest is set between Reddy and the NDA’s nominee, C. P. Radhakrishnan, who currently serves as the Governor of Maharashtra.

The decision was finalised at a meeting of the alliance’s parliamentary floor leaders, chaired by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.

Justice Reddy is widely respected for his progressive judgements and commitment to social justice. During his legal career, he served as a judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court, and later as a judge of the Supreme Court of India. Known for championing the rights of the poor and protecting the Constitution, he has earned recognition as one of India’s most principled jurists.

On the other hand, the NDA’s candidate C. P. Radhakrishnan is a senior BJP leader with deep roots in the RSS.

The vice-presidential elections will be held on September 9, with August 21 being the last date for filing nominations. The post became vacant after the sudden resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar last month.

Kharge, while announcing Reddy’s candidature, said:
“Justice B. Sudershan Reddy has always stood for social, economic and political justice. His judgements reflect his concern for the poor and his commitment to safeguarding the Constitution and fundamental rights.”
