Former ASG Pinky Anand Appointed Judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court
Senior Advocate Pinky Anand has been appointed as a judge of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC), which will officially begin operations on November 5.
Anand, one of India’s most respected legal professionals, has over four decades of experience in the legal field. She earlier served as the Additional Solicitor General of India between 2014 and 2020. Over the years, she has acted as an arbitrator in several international cases held in India, Dubai, Malaysia, and Singapore.
She has also represented India at the BRICS legal forum and was among the founding members of this group’s legal body, contributing significantly to cross-border legal cooperation.
The Bahrain International Commercial Court is inspired by the Singapore International Commercial Court model. It aims to handle complex international commercial disputes in both English and Arabic. For English-language judgments, the right of appeal will lie with Singapore’s international committee, while cases decided in Arabic or by agreement of the parties will be heard by the BICC Appellate Tribunal.
With Pinky Anand’s appointment, the BICC now has 17 judges, including 7 women and 10 men, representing a strong balance of diversity and global legal expertise.
Union Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, congratulated Anand on her appointment. He remarked that this recognition of an Indian jurist on such a global forum highlights India’s growing influence in international arbitration and commercial dispute resolution. He added that Anand’s appointment reflects global trust in Indian legal talent and will help strengthen judicial collaboration across borders.
