Justice A Muhamed Mustaque Recommended as Chief Justice of Sikkim High Court
The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Justice A Muhamed Mustaque of the Kerala High Court as the Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court. The decision was taken in a meeting held on December 18, 2025.
The post of Chief Justice of the Sikkim High Court became vacant after the retirement of Justice Biswanath Somadder on December 14, 2025. To fill this vacancy, the Collegium proposed Justice Mustaque’s name as part of a larger recommendation involving five High Court judges being elevated as Chief Justices across the country.
The Collegium was headed by Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant.
Justice A Muhamed Mustaque was born on June 1, 1967, and hails from Kannur, Kerala. He completed his law degree from VB College of Law, Udupi, and later obtained an LLM in Labour Law from Mahatma Gandhi University.
He enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and mainly practised before courts and statutory authorities in Kannur. Over the years, he also undertook specialised international legal studies, including space and telecommunication law at Paris XI University, private international law at the Hague Academy, and e-commerce and intellectual property law at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Justice Mustaque was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Kerala High Court in 2014 and became a Permanent Judge in 2016. He also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Kerala High Court from July 5, 2024.
