Justice M Sundar Appointed as New Chief Justice of Manipur High Court

The Central government has appointed Justice M Sundar, senior judge of the Madras High Court, as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. He will assume office following the retirement of the present Chief Justice, Justice Kempaiah Somashekar, on 14 September 2025. The official appointment order was issued on 13 September 2025, after the Supreme Court Collegium recommended his name earlier this month.

Justice Sundar is currently the second senior-most judge of the Madras High Court. His elevation continues a trend, as several judges from the Madras High Court—including Justices Ramalingam Sudhakar, MV Muralidharan, and D Krishna Kumar—have previously headed the Manipur High Court.

Born on 19 July 1966 in Chennai, Justice Sundar pursued his law degree at Madras Law College as part of the first-ever batch of the five-year integrated course. He enrolled as an advocate in 1989 and primarily practiced before the Madras High Court, specialising in civil cases.

In October 2016, he was elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court. Over the years, he has delivered several significant judgments, many of which have been widely referred to in legal circles.

With his new role, Justice Sundar will lead the Manipur High Court at a crucial time, as the judiciary in the state continues to address sensitive legal matters and uphold public trust. His deep expertise in civil law and long judicial experience are expected to strengthen the court’s functioning.
