Justice Surya Kant to Become the Next Chief Justice of India: Centre Approves the Appointment
The Central government has approved the appointment of Supreme Court Judge Justice Surya Kant as the next Chief Justice of India (CJI). He will assume office on November 24, 2025, succeeding CJI BR Gavai, who retires a day earlier on November 23.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointment on X, stating:
“In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 24th November 2025. My heartiest congratulations and best wishes to him.”
This appointment follows the recommendation of CJI BR Gavai, who had written to the Law Ministry earlier this week proposing Justice Kant as his successor.
Justice Surya Kant was elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019, and will serve as CJI till February 9, 2027, giving him a tenure of around 14 months in the top post.
Born on February 10, 1962, in Hisar, Haryana, Justice Kant comes from a middle-class family. He completed his graduation from Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981 and earned his Bachelor’s degree in Law from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.
Justice Kant began his legal practice at the Hisar District Court in 1984 before moving to the Punjab and Haryana High Court the following year. He was designated a Senior Advocate in March 2001 and later served as the Advocate General of Haryana.
He was appointed as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004, and later became the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court on October 5, 2018. In May 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court of India.
Justice Surya Kant’s journey from Hisar to the highest judicial office in the country stands as an inspiring example of dedication and integrity in the Indian judiciary.
