Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju Takes Oath as Karnataka High Court Judge
Justice Tara Vitasta Ganju officially took oath as a judge of the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday. The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru.
The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended her transfer from the Delhi High Court in August 2025, and the Central government issued the notification on October 14.
Justice Ganju’s transfer had sparked strong opposition from members of the legal fraternity. The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), its women lawyers’ group, and several other advocates had written to Chief Justice of India BR Gavai expressing their disagreement with the transfer.
Born in 1971, Justice Ganju earned her Bachelor’s degree in Law from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in 1995. She later pursued advanced legal studies in the United Kingdom after receiving the prestigious British Chevening Scholarship in 1999.
Beginning her practice in 1995, she built a distinguished career as an advocate at the Delhi High Court, handling a wide range of matters related to property, inheritance, civil law, arbitration, company law, criminal matters, and intellectual property. She appeared before the court in its original, appellate, and writ jurisdictions.
Justice Ganju was elevated to the Delhi High Court bench on May 18, 2022.
Her farewell from the Delhi High Court on Monday was an emotional moment. During her speech, she became teary-eyed upon noticing her daughter crying. Smiling through her own emotions, she gently told her daughter, “If you cry, I will cry.”
