Karnataka Introduces Paid Menstrual Leave for Women in Both Government and Private Sectors

In a progressive move towards gender-sensitive workplace policies, the Karnataka Cabinet has approved the Menstrual Leave Policy 2025, granting one paid menstrual leave per month to women employees across both government and private organisations.

Under this policy, women can avail up to 12 paid leaves in a year specifically for menstrual-related discomfort or health needs.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating,

“Through the Menstrual Leave Policy 2025, women employees across Karnataka will now receive one paid leave day every month — a step towards a more humane, understanding, and inclusive workplace.”

The policy applies to all women employees working in government offices, garment factories, IT companies, multinational corporations, and private sector organisations in the state.

According to a Deccan Herald report, this decision follows the recommendations of an 18-member committee headed by Sapna S, Associate Dean and Head of the School of Law at Christ (Deemed to be) University. The committee included members from industry bodies, trade unions, government departments, healthcare professionals, and academic institutions such as the Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC) and Christ University.

The move has been welcomed as a landmark step in promoting women’s health and equality in the workplace, encouraging other states to consider similar policies in the future.
