Market Data Firm Sues Groww Group for Alleged Trademark Passing Off of ‘915trade’

A Bengaluru-based market data analyst, Chandrakkanth Patil, the proprietor of 915trade, has filed a case before the Thiruvananthapuram District Court accusing Billionbrains Garage Ventures Pvt Ltd (BGV), a Groww group company, of misusing his trademark. Patil alleges that BGV launched a deceptively similar website and tried to take advantage of his goodwill.

The court issued notice in the case on October 14, and the next hearing is scheduled for November 22. This development coincides with the ongoing IPO of Groww.

Patil stated that he has been using the proprietary trade name “915trade” since 2015 and officially launched his website, www.915trade.com, in November 2024. The platform provides subscription-based securities market analysis using his proprietary software. The name “915” refers to the 9:15 am stock market opening time, and according to Patil, it has become well-known across India.

In August 2025, Groww sent a cease-and-desist notice to Patil, claiming ownership of the marks “915” and “915 by Groww”, based on their pending trademark applications in Class 36. Patil countered this by saying that Groww had not shown any proof of prior use and had itself admitted that these marks were only “proposed to be used.”

Patil further alleged that soon after sending the notice, BGV launched a website named www.915.trade.com, which offered services similar to his own. This, he claims, created confusion among users, especially in Kerala, as many mistook the Groww website for his own, leading to loss of business and reputational damage.

The lawsuit accuses Groww of passing off — an act where one business misrepresents its goods or services as those of another — and of trying to misuse the goodwill associated with the “915trade” name. Patil is seeking a permanent injunction, damages with 12% interest, and costs, along with an accounting of profits made by the defendant.

The cause of action, according to Patil, began when he started using the mark in 2015, launched his website in 2024, and when Groww allegedly launched its own similar website around July–August 2025.Patil is being represented by Advocates V Bahuleyan, Ananthu Bahuleyan, a
