Mohammed Shami’s Wife Moves Supreme Court Seeking ₹10 Lakh Monthly Maintenance

The Supreme Court has issued a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government after his wife, Hasin Jahan, approached the Court seeking a monthly interim maintenance of ₹10 lakh for herself and their daughter.

She has challenged a Calcutta High Court order that had directed Shami to pay ₹4 lakh per month — ₹1.5 lakh for her and ₹2.5 lakh for their minor daughter — until the domestic violence case against him is decided.

Her plea before the top court seeks to increase the amount to ₹10 lakh per month, stating that the High Court did not adequately consider Shami’s income and the standard of living she was accustomed to during their marriage.

The matter was heard by a Bench of Justices Manoj Misra and Ujjal Bhuyan, which also asked her whether the ₹4 lakh already granted by the High Court was insufficient.

Represented by Senior Advocate Shobha Gupta and advocates Deepak Prakash, Sriram Parakkat, and Divyangna Mallik, Jahan argued that she and her daughter are being denied the lifestyle they were entitled to when she lived with Shami.

The couple married in April 2014 and have a daughter born in July 2015. In 2018, Jahan filed a complaint alleging domestic violence and later sought ₹10 lakh monthly maintenance — ₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for their daughter — under the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005.

The trial court initially ordered Shami to pay ₹1.3 lakh per month, which the High Court increased to ₹4 lakh in July 2025.

In her petition, Jahan claimed that Shami, being a top national cricketer with an estimated net worth exceeding ₹500 crore, can easily afford the requested maintenance. She asserted that their daughter deserves the same standard of education and lifestyle as children of other elite cricketers.

She further stated that she currently has no independent income and bears full responsibility for raising their child.
