The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of Preeta Aravindan Krishnamma and Liz Mathew Anthraper as judges of the Kerala High Court. The recommendation was made at a meeting held on April 14, marking another step in the process of filling vacancies in the High Court.
The move is important for the Kerala High Court, which is currently functioning below its sanctioned strength. The High Court has an approved strength of 47 judges, but at present, only 38 judges are in office. This leaves nine posts vacant.
Among the two names recommended, Liz Mathew is a well-known legal professional with significant experience before the Supreme Court. She studied law at the National Law School of India University, Bengaluru, one of the country’s leading law schools.
Her professional journey includes working closely with major figures in the legal field. She served as a junior to former Supreme Court judge Justice Indu Malhotra and also to former Attorney General KK Venugopal. This gave her early exposure to high-level constitutional and appellate litigation.
In 2008, Mathew cleared the Supreme Court Advocate on Record examination and thereafter started her independent legal practice. Over the years, she built a strong presence in the Supreme Court and handled a range of important matters.
She also served as Standing Counsel for the State of Kerala from 2011 to 2016. That role added to her experience in representing government interests and dealing with public law issues. In January 2024, she was designated as a Senior Advocate.
The recommendation of Preeta Aravindan Krishnamma alongside Mathew reflects the Collegium’s effort to strengthen the bench in Kerala. While the available details in the recommendation note focus more on Mathew’s background, both names have now been forwarded as part of the appointment process.
