Supreme Court Extends Free Wi-Fi Access to Entire Main Building
In a move to make the Supreme Court of India more digitally accessible, Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai announced that free Wi-Fi will now be available in all areas of the Court’s main building.
Until now, the facility was limited to specific courtrooms. With this expansion, lawyers, litigants, journalists, and visitors can now enjoy internet access from any part of the main building.
Announcing the development in open court, CJI Gavai said,
“Free public Wi-Fi has now been extended to all areas of the Supreme Court’s main building. It is open for use by the Bar, litigants, and all visitors. Earlier, it was limited only to courtrooms.”
The Supreme Court first introduced free Wi-Fi in July 2023. During the first phase, it covered the Chief Justice’s Court, Courts 2 to 5, the adjoining corridors, the plaza, press lounges, and the canteen waiting areas.
A circular issued at the time had also mentioned that the facility would gradually be extended to the bar libraries, ladies bar room, and bar lounge.
Under the leadership of former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, the Supreme Court has taken several steps towards technological modernization. These include promoting paperless functioning, improving the e-filing system, and strengthening its digital infrastructure.
The latest move reflects the Court’s continued commitment to providing an efficient, transparent, and digitally connected environment for all stakeholders in the justice system.
