Supreme Court Tells Amritpal Singh to Move Punjab and Haryana High Court in NSA Detention Case

The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain a petition filed by Waris Punjab De chief and Member of Parliament Amritpal Singh, who had challenged the extension of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) [Amritpal Singh v. Union of India & Ors.].

A Bench comprising Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria advised Singh to move the Punjab and Haryana High Court instead. The top court also directed that the High Court should dispose of his plea promptly—within six weeks.

Amritpal Singh, who is currently lodged in Dibrugarh Jail, Assam, has been under preventive detention since 2023. Despite being elected to the Lok Sabha from the Khadoor Sahib constituency in 2024, his detention continues to be extended.

This marks the third extension of his NSA detention, reportedly linked to the investigation into the murder of YouTuber Gurpreet Singh Harinau in Faridkot in October 2024. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has named Amritpal Singh and Canada-based Khalistani operative Arshdeep Singh Gill alias Arsh Dalla in connection with the case.

While the NSA detention of nine of Singh’s associates has been revoked after nearly two years, the preventive order remains in effect only against him.
