“Think First, Speak Later”: Justice Karia’s Advice at IBA Next Gen Summit

Justice Tejas Karia of the Delhi High Court told young lawyers that true advocacy begins with clear thinking, not dramatic speaking. Speaking at the International Bar Association’s (IBA) Next Gen Legal Summit in New Delhi, he stressed discipline, humility, strong preparation, and mindful use of technology in the courtroom.

He explained that a lawyer must understand the facts, know the law well, and identify the core issues before stepping into court. According to him, advocacy is about selecting the most important points, anticipating questions from judges or arbitrators, and presenting arguments in a simple and logical manner.

Justice Karia reminded the audience that oral advocacy is an intellectual activity, not a stage performance. He said the profession demands honesty, discipline and a lifelong commitment to justice.

He highlighted the importance of active listening, saying that a single question from the judge can change the direction of a case. Listening carefully to the judge, opposing counsel and witnesses helps an advocate build stronger arguments.

He also encouraged young lawyers to keep their submissions brief and precise. During the summit, while referring to a session on cross-examination, he advised lawyers to ask only necessary questions and avoid risking their case by over-questioning. If a favourable answer comes, he said, the advocate must hold on to it and stay composed.

Justice Karia further warned against relying too heavily on technology. While digital tools are useful, he said they should support the lawyer’s work and not replace careful thinking, especially since electronic records can be altered and algorithms may not always be correct.

He told young lawyers that growth in the legal profession requires patience, guidance from good mentors and emotional stability. No one becomes a successful advocate alone, he added.

IBA Treasurer Amir Singh Pasricha also spoke at the event and emphasised that humility before the court is essential. Advocate Arush Khanna of Numen Law Offices delivered the vote of thanks.
