Tushar Mehta Re-Appointed Solicitor General for Another Three-Year Term

Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta has been re-appointed as the Solicitor General for India for another three-year term. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has also approved fresh terms for five Additional Solicitors General representing the Central government before the Supreme Court.

According to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training on June 20, 2026, Mehta’s new tenure will begin on July 1, 2026. His appointment will continue for three years or until further government orders, whichever occurs earlier.

Mehta has held the position of Solicitor General since October 10, 2018. His present term began on July 1, 2023, and is scheduled to conclude on June 30, 2026. The latest decision ensures continuity in the Union government’s senior legal representation before the Supreme Court.

The Solicitor General is among the country’s highest-ranking law officers and assists the Attorney General for India. The office holder represents the Union government in important constitutional, statutory and policy-related disputes before the Supreme Court and other courts.

The Cabinet committee has also approved the re-appointment of Senior Advocates Vikramjit Banerjee and KM Nataraj as Additional Solicitors General for the Supreme Court. Their fresh terms will take effect from July 1, 2026.

Senior Advocates Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkataraman and Aishwarya Bhati have also received fresh three-year terms as Additional Solicitors General. Their re-appointments will become effective from June 30, 2026.

The tenure of all five Additional Solicitors General will remain valid for three years or until further orders, whichever is earlier. They will continue representing the Central government in significant matters pending before the Supreme Court.

Banerjee was initially appointed as an Additional Solicitor General on March 5, 2018. He received another term from July 1, 2023. Nataraj first assumed the position on January 14, 2019, before being re-appointed from July 1, 2023.

Raju, Venkataraman and Bhati were first appointed as Additional Solicitors General for the Supreme Court on June 30, 2020. Each of them subsequently received a renewed term beginning on June 30, 2023.

The committee has separately approved the continuation of Senior Advocate Chetan Sharma as Additional Solicitor General for the Delhi High Court. He has been granted a further tenure of six months beginning July 1, 2026, or until further orders.

Sharma was first appointed to the position on July 1, 2020. His earlier re-appointment took effect on July 1, 2023, with the existing tenure scheduled to end on June 30, 2026.
