Vijay’s Film Jana Nayagan Moves Madras High Court Over CBFC Certification Delay

The producers of actor-turned-politician Vijay’s upcoming Tamil film Jana Nayagan have moved the Madras High Court, questioning the delay in granting the final censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Jana Nayagan is expected to be Vijay’s last film before he fully enters politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The film is scheduled to release on January 9, but the CBFC has not yet issued the final certificate required for its theatrical release.

According to the producers, the CBFC’s Examining Committee had earlier recommended a ‘UA 16+’ certificate after suggesting certain cuts. These changes were made by the filmmakers and the revised version was submitted on time. The producers say they were later informed that the film would receive the ‘UA 16+’ certificate.

However, just days before the release, the CBFC referred the film to a Revising Committee following a complaint allegedly linked to religious sentiments and portrayal of the armed forces. The producers have challenged this move, arguing that the certification process was already completed and cannot be reopened without valid reasons.

They have also stated that the details of the complaint, including the complainant’s identity, were not shared, making the decision unfair and against principles of natural justice. The producers further questioned how a complaint could arise when the film has not been publicly screened.

During the hearing, the filmmakers informed the Court that nearly ₹500 crore is at stake, as the film is set to release in over 5,000 screens worldwide. They also raised concerns that further delay could increase the risk of piracy and cause serious financial and reputational damage.

Justice P.T. Asha heard the matter, while the CBFC sought time to file its reply. The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
