Justice Sanjeev Kumar Takes Charge as Acting Chief Justice of J&K and Ladakh High Court

Justice Sanjeev Kumar has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court following the elevation of Justice Arun Palli to the Supreme Court of India. The appointment was notified by the Department of Justice under the Ministry of Law and Justice on June 1, 2026.

With Justice Arun Palli moving to the Supreme Court, the responsibility of leading the High Court has now been entrusted to Justice Sanjeev Kumar until a regular Chief Justice is appointed. The appointment ensures continuity in the administration and functioning of the High Court during the transition period.

Justice Sanjeev Kumar has had a long association with the legal profession in Jammu and Kashmir. Born on April 8, 1966, he completed his law degree from the University of Jammu in 1989. Soon after obtaining his degree, he enrolled as an advocate and began practising before the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir.

During his years at the Bar, Justice Kumar handled a wide range of matters, including civil disputes, constitutional issues, service law cases and taxation matters. His legal career also included public service when he served as the Senior Additional Advocate General for the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir.

His elevation to the Bench came on June 6, 2017, when he was appointed as a permanent judge of the High Court. Over the years, he has been part of several important decisions concerning constitutional protections, preventive detention, land-related disputes, public administration and service law matters.

Justice Kumar’s judicial work has earned recognition for addressing significant legal and governance issues affecting the region. His experience both as a practising advocate and as a judge has contributed to his standing within the judiciary.

The appointment comes at a significant time for the High Court, particularly after the recent expansion of the Supreme Court and the consequent elevation of several High Court judges across the country. As Acting Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Kumar will oversee the functioning of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court until the appointment of a permanent Chief Justice.

His elevation to the top administrative position within the High Court reflects his extensive legal experience and years of judicial service. The appointment is expected to ensure smooth judicial administration and continuity in the disposal of cases before the High Court.
